Department Summary

Founded in 2001, the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law is dedicated to conducting rigorous, independent research on sexual orientation and gender identity law and public policy. The Institute disseminates its research to policymakers, judges, the media, and other stakeholders to ensure that decisions impacting the lives of millions of LGBT people and families are based on data and facts.

Position Summary

The Williams Institute is in search of a Project Policy Analyst who will produce empirical research that is vital to advancing the work of the Institute. The Project Policy Analyst will administer social science, public health, and public policy research and analysis related to the mission of the Institute in close collaboration with Williams Institute Scholars. Primary responsibilities include:

  1. Researching, monitoring, and analyzing regulations and legislation as it pertains to the Institute.
  2. Developing and managing project timelines, research materials, datasets, and analyses.
  3. Developing research protocols and study materials.
  4. Preparing and administering human subjects protection protocols.
  5. Managing data collection and conducting data analyses.
  6. Preparing and assisting in the preparation of written products including literature reviews, research reports, manuscripts, grant proposals, fact sheets, graphics, policy summaries, and presentations.
Salary & Compensation

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common.

Qualifications

  • Experience in developing operational procedures for the collection, editing, verification and management of quantitative and qualitative data (Preferred).
  • Familiarity and experience with Internet and other scholarly search engines (Required).
  • Familiarity and experience with conducting literature reviews and evaluating the quality and significance of social science literature (Required).
  • Experience with interview-based or other text-based qualitative research (Required).
  • Versatility and substantive knowledge in one or more social sciences and in sexual orientation and gender identity policy issues (Preferred).
  • Superior research skills (e.g., experience conducting bibliographic searches, performing writing and analysis, selecting and using print and electronic research tools) (Required).
  • Ability to perform a variety of intermediate and advanced statistical and analytical activities for the design of both quantitative and qualitative research studies and for the collection, compilation and analysis of data (Required).
  • Ability to plan, create, program and manage complex data resources (Preferred).
  • Working knowledge of social science research and demonstrated ability to write clear, cogent, factually accurate research reports and summaries (Required).
  • Ability to read and synthesize scholarly literature and to write articles and summaries on varied research topics (Required).
  • Skill in negotiating, exchanging ideas, information and opinions with others to arrive jointly at decisions, conclusions and solutions (Required).
  • Ability to work independently on large and complex research projects and to assist Williams Institute staff in preparing materials for publication (Required).
  • Skill in determining priorities which accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities and deadlines (Required).
  • Experience with interview-based or other text-based qualitative research (Required).
  • Commitment to the Williams Institute's mission and passion for improving the lives of LGBT people through independent and rigorous research (Preferred).
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Master's Degree in related discipline (e.g., public policy, economics, statistics, psychology, public health, sociology, political science or a related discipline) or equivalent combination of education & experience (Required).

  • Detailed knowledge in editing correspondence for correct meaning, word usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation (Required).
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal and professional communication skills (Required).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information with tact and discretion (Required).
